haha, Catfish, was just messing with you, am sure you are right about summer...75 sounds great to me, we are at 105 today
I did just go on vacation in May for a week to visit relatives in Iowa and then over to Chicago for a few days. This is our second trip we are going to Destin/Pensacola Fl for a week. Then no more vac time til December, but the kids will start school so it will feel like one. We did a big Disney trip a couple years ago and figured for what we spent there, we could take 2 smaller less expensive trips so trying that out. My kids tell me they want to go to Scotland and Ireland next year, I promptly laughed. Welcome Fizzle! A warning, how did that happen Phoggy? |

i know fizzle from our hockey thread. he's one great and witty guy.
hawk--i was in destin, florida for 5 days. i never wanted to leave! the whitest beaches i have ever seen and super clean. the cabana boys who set up the chairs on the beaches are lifeguards, but there is no watch tower like in NJ. an amazing place. i don't know how people make a living down there bc our cabana boy was a lifeguard from feb to nov for tips and then worked at a hotel from nov 1 to feb 1. jobs are tough down there as it's a beach community. if you can get in as a bartender, you're set or construction as many homes need repair. have a great time. awesome place. funniest thing there...driving on danny wuefful highway, the 96 heisman winner. haha. |

Kat wants to go to the Destin area when she gets back from Kenya, but the idea of the drive depresses me. Got a suggestion on a place to stay? Our hotel was ok last year, right on the beach, but I'd love to stay somewhere more condo-ish.

This is my first time there, have been to St George Island (nice place if you get a house, do NOT stay in the only hotel on the island), Panama City (not for spring break though), Tallahassee/Crawfordville area (uncle lived there) so if the beaches are like Panama City, it will be nice.
Phoggy, when I get back, I will let you know, we have a condo type place is my understanding, the wife did all the planning on this one and I can PM you the info or I will give you my email and can pass the info. I do know this, the condo we have sleeps 6 (2 twin beds - bunk beds for the kids, a queen bed in the bedroom and a pull out couch) for $980 for the week (Sat to Friday). I am making them drive over to Pensacola on Wed next week to go to a minor league baseball game, it used to be the Pensacola Pelicans, but apparently now the Blue Wahoos...looking forward to it. Just going to relax, read the new Daniel Silva book and play in the waves. Expecting the drive to be 12 hours with the kids though, leaving at 4 am sat morning to get there at check in time. Thinking about hitting New Orleans on the way home for some cajun food and beignets at Cafe Du Monde. |

Good morning all. Have a great time, hawk, and yes, I will take any recommendations you pass along. There will be a lot of sea grass floating in the water near the shore. But, if you pull the floaties out about 10-15 feet, the water is clean and the kids can look down and see the fish. We watched Dolphins jumping every morning from the beach last year. I was very pleasantly surprised at hw much I liked it. I did not really beleive the sand was that white!!
Cat, Paul, Lil, greetings. |

we drove from atlanta, which sucked. i would rather fly into panama city, which is 40 min away. Checked on flights, never got below $421 which means a cool $1700 or more for a family of 4 plus car rental vs a family road trip a la the Griswolds and gas should not even be that much. If I was monetarily wealthy, no problemo on that one, but it is what it is so driving. Good to know on the sea grass, I guess the place where we are is about a football field away from the beach but also has a pool right there in the complex. Now I can go to a pool here so will be popping on the shoes to get out on the beach instead. It's strange though as I have been on black sand beaches as well, but you are right, those are really white in that area for the whole panhandle and very soft. Must have something to do with the rocks and maybe the decomposed shells? Just glad the kids have their dvd players and headphones, I do recall at their age, I had books and AM radio on a trip to Colorado. They have no clue these days. |

hawk-some states have tolls too. gas is high pal and are you driving straight through to florida or getting a room for 1 night?
it all adds up no matter what. |

hawk, we went through Memphis, down to Mobile and over. The sand is white quartzite washed down from the Appalachians. It makes the squeaky sound when you walk on it b/c of the angular facets on the grains. Yep....I'm a geology/geography nerd....

OK, that sounds like the route that my wife mapped out, I do not believe there are any tolls there then...and Catfish, I hear ya, I tried to go a back route into Chicago and got "tolled" to the tune of $26 when it was all added up. I believe we are going 725 miles one way so for our van we get about 400 miles to the tank so 2 fillups, but I am sure we will stop for the kids and to eat and such, but I will be plowing through starting at 4 am with a goal to get there at 4 pm.
Am also a geology nerd in some respects so that makes sense to me Phoggy. It is beautiful for sure, the white sands in New Mexico are almost the same thing. |

chicago/state of illinois had tolls every damn exit on 355 and I-88. it cost me 95 cents 1 way to get to my sister's house in sycamore, il. 15 cents to get on I-88, 65 cents at the toll at aurora and 15 cents to get off I-88 at Sycamore. Total racket.
Thank God I-95 here in Philly doesn't have a toll every exit bc there are a ton of streets that are off ramps they could toll 10 cents a car. the traffic would be dreadful. now pa has a turnpike system that has tolls but it leads to anywhere practically in the whole state. |

Good morning Catfish!
Wish that was the weather forecast for Ohio. Sad, but the baking effect continues there I hear, and will do so next week as well. All temps in the 90s each day. Been in Texas since July 12 to find a new hacienda for me and the Senora to retire to. Found one just built by a nephew and his wife. Perfect size, and with all the boxes ticked we were looking for. So, just watching the British Open at the moment. Won't return to the original hacienda up north till Monday. Then, get it sold to one of my daughters who wants it, pack up, and make the move in October. Then, settle into retirement. ![]() Rok |

Congrats Rok, that sounds like an awesome plan and hope you enjoy the new home and new retired life...since you are in Texas, eat a giant steak for me down there. Best steak I had was in Dallas one year.
Check back with you all on July 30 |
