2009 Steelers Draft and Mel Kiper Sucks Thread

May 25, 2012 9:15 pm

I know it's tough to draft a RB high up, but with Ball and Lattimore available, I just wonder how high up on the board they will be.  Walter Football has us taking WR Marquess Wilson and then ILB CJ Mosley. Not sure if I like us drafting mid 20's ahead of some teams I think the Steelers are better than, namely Detroit, Houston, and Chicago.   Barret Jones is someone that will be high up on the list, even though we have some new blood and talent on the OL, you can always improve. Jones is talented and versitile, he is an upgrade of Trai Essex, and that is the idea in the draft, upgrade the roster.  The  ultimate pick right now is still Manti Te'o.

NY,

You know my thoughts drafting RB's high - dont like it...   and I agree - wuld be nice to see Manti Te'o drop to us at #32...

We need to look at OLB too next year.  I'm not wild about Worilds - never was..  Some folks on here talking about him "almost" getting to the QB..  That wont cut the mustard - Worilds has shown that he is nothing but mediocre at this point - especially vs the running game..   And why do I bring up the running game when the league is "passing league"?  - first and for most we must win the division in order to guarantee us in the playoffs...  win the division.  So let's see - Baltimore runs the ball well..  Cleveland just drafted a kid with the 3rd pick that we will need to stop twice a year... Cinncy drafted Zeitler - a better run blocker and pulling OG compared to his Pass blocking..   We are going to have to be able to stop the run first and foremost to be successful in this division - I look for us to draft OLB next year early..

Enjoy,

bb,

I agree LB in general, both inside and out. Hopein Sly comes to life this year, Worilds is developing slower than I hoped for.  I am one of the doubters on Sean Spence, seems smallish.

CJ Mosley is coming off an injury, keep your eye on the kid out of UConn, Sio Moore, kid has that twitch Tomlin likes.

Chad Ruetter's top 5 by position.

Where I disagree is he has Jones ahead of Mingo, Matthieu ahead of Banks and Rhodes. I also don't like Mosley ahead of Te'o, and then Davis and Barner ahead of Montee Ball.

THoughts?

I guess I am taking RB's for the 2013 draft.

My top 5

!. Marcus Lattimore
2. Montee Ball
3. Andre Ellington
4. Knile Davis
5. Giovani Bernard

Some concerns about MIchale Dyer's baggage ane the slender build of Joe Randle, have me dropping them considerably down, further than most. Walter Football's Charlie Campbell has us taking Dyer over Ball, I don't buy it.  ONe thing to keep in mind is the mileage on these backs, Chris Johnson and Ray Rice both had lots of carries in college, they are the exception. Figure you get 5 years out of a RB, example FWP, then they are done. If they carried the ball 1000 times in College, the odomoter is already rolling towards the junkyard.

No secret I like Clay as a move the chains guy, looks like the took the off-season and pulled an Antonio Brown, hope it pays off for the young man.

What I see is a lot of talent in the RB;s, but only Mendenhall is a dual threat, and people never give Rashard credit for pickinp up blitzers, he is better than most of the negative opinons on here. The one thing I don;t care for are the fumbles and the spinning. Hit the hole and get positive yards, the big plays will come to those with patience.

Mendenhall just likes to bounce it outside an awful lot. It probably worked for him more at Illinois than it has in the NFL, even though the Fighting Illini line was as questionable as ours was when he came here. Plus, I won't pretend he didn't have great seasons in 2009 and 2010. Our running game overall just wasn't as good last year as it was before. Isaac Redman would not have fared better with a comparable sample size to Mendenhall, and I strongly believe that. Even last season, before Tom Shaw's training, Dwyer probably would have done better than Redman would have.

I feel like Chris Rainey definitely will make this roster, as will Mendenhall if he isn't cut before the season starts. That leaves probably two spots open to Redman, Dwyer, Clay, and Batch. Moore has no chance and I'm almost glad to say that.

Demo,

This is year 5 of Rashard Mendenhall's 5 year deal he inked in 2008. I am not sure how he recovers from the ACL. When given space he is very effective and the best option at RB. Redman is a graet backup nothing more, if he was in shape I believe Johnathon Dwyer actually has more talent.

What I am hoping for is simply this. David DeCastro and Willie Colon to kick ass. My gut tells me your starting LT will be Trai Essex, and no I am not on crack.  Put your best 5 on the field. To me, next year Mike Adams if he keeps his head on straight, stays out of trouble, and take to Kugler's instruction, you may have something. I hope he surprises most of us and starts as a rookie, I tend to be on the skeptical side of that.

Bottom line is the line. ANy good back, weither a UFA or a first rounder needs room to run.  Marcus Gilbert is coming along nicely, another piece of the puzzle.  In the 2013 draft I would have Barret Jones ahead of Marcus Lattimore, I think he has more value. If you have ass kickers and name takers up front, both the run and the pass will open up.  Back in 2004, one of their better OL groups Pittsburgh had, it mostly high draft picks. Sometimes you get Lucky with a John Jackson (11th round LT), but mostly top OL talent is taken in the earlier rounds. The same goes for Defenense, the line is the building blocks of your foundation.

ROc,

I will gladly take DB's over RB's no problem. Not sure if Demo wanted DB's, we may split it up and one of  us takes Safeties and the other takes corners.

NY, I was interested in safeties a while back, not so much the corners. If you were gonna kill two birds without one stone, by all means, take both, or else we can take two other positions at once. For me it can be possible to watch the safeties and QBs. Whatever, I'll let you decide.

RE: what is with the ghost town on here...

Most of us are pretty happy with this years 1st couple of draft picks, that hasnt happen in a long time. It's like after eating Thanksgiving dinner were fat and happy/satisfied.

I'm going to be watching potential OLB's but not officially there are better qualified posters on here.
Courious though, the Steelers seam to be getting mostley smaller LB's. It doesnt mean they are completely changing there scheme but I read somewhere( I think it was on Twitter or a link there ) that the Steelers played more cover 2 last year than they have in the last 20 years.
That could be from the injuries to Harrison and Woodley too but we will see.

2009 Steelers Draft and Mel Kiper Sucks Thread

I have my first 2013 Steelers mock draft if y'all are interested.

1. T.J. McDonald, S, USC - Still my first round pick for us. Either Ryan Mundy or Will Allen will spend his last season in a Steelers uniform in 2012.

2. Gerald Hodges, ILB, Penn State - I'm in the boat that believes in Sean Spence, but I also don't think Larry Foote will be here in 2013. Hodges has been a playmaker for Penn State.

3. Shariff Floyd, DL, Florida - Has a boatload of potential, and after playing DE in Florida he'll play more DT this season. He has real power and quickness, and if he puts on weight, ne might be successful as both a DE and a situational NT in our defense.

4. Philip Lutzenkirchen, TE, Auburn - TEs aren't a focus of Auburn's offense, so Lutzenkirchen has been primarily a blocker. He can catch passes, however, and do it well.

5. Datone Jones, DE, UCLA - Is a protypically sized DE at 6'5", 280 pounds (the largest I've seen him listed). Another 10-20 pounds and he'd look like a top DE candidate. He comes from a rough past and can be one of the feel-good stories in college football.

6. Nathan Williams, OLB, Ohio State - Another Buckeye defender. The red flag on Williams is that he blew out his knee last season with an injury that is holding him out of spring practices as well. He looks like a perfect OLB for our system if healthy.

7. Sean Renfree, QB, Duke - Stands at 6'5", is mobile, and has a strong arm.

UD1. Dallas Thomas, OT, Tennesee
UD2. Alex Carder, QB, Western Michigan

No RB or receiver?  You have faith in the guys the Steelers have, and that Wallace will remain a Steeler?

Yes to both, actually. Wallace is the Steelers' offseason priority, and the Steelers are great at retaining who they want to keep. As for RB, even if we lose Mendenhall, I have an incredible feeling about Jonathan Dwyer. I feel like he and Chris Rainey are this team's future RB tandem. Plus, we still have Redman, Clay, and Batch fighting for roster spots. Why add yet another body to this mix?

The back I want to keep an eye on is in the Big Ten. No not Montee Ball, but Le'veon Bell. This kid is a HAMMER. He has good footwork and some pass catching ability.

Just did some quick math on this thread, from April 25th of 2009 this thread has hit ( or so it says ) 828,290 views, thats an average of 738 clicks per day, maybe CBS should think about using it to it's own advantage, maybe tell companys on facebook they should advertise in this thread. I think it would get more hits than the homepage gets.
