Boise State will not be a BCS buster much longer.

On Thursday, the Idaho State Board of Education gave Boise State President Bob Kustra authorization to join the Big East as football-only member.

The Big East is one of six automatic qualifying BCS leagues and is guaranteed its BCS status through the 2013 season. Boise State has not received an "official invitation" yet, but would join the Big East on July 1, 2013.

The addition of Boise State would be huge for the Big East, which is trying to restock its league after Pittsburgh, Syracuse, TCU and West Virginia announced they would be leaving the league for the ACC or Big 12 conferences.

Boise State submitted a motion to its State Board of Education Thursday to “change conference affiliation for its intercollegiate athletics teams” and leave the Mountain West. It was passed by the board, 7-1, Thursday afternoon. The school likely won't finalize a move to the Big East until it can secure a home for its Olympic sports.

As reported by CBSSports.com on Tuesday, lawyers from Boise State, UCF, Houston and SMU have been working together the past two weeks in negotiations with the Big East and plan to have all four introduced together as new members. Sources told CBSSports.com this could occur as early as Friday, but Kustra told the state's Board of Education a move may not occur until next week.

Although no official invitation from the Big East has been extended, Big East commissioner John Marinatto has had numerous conversations with representatives from all four schools – plus Navy and Air Force – in the past weeks.

“The University anticipates an offer is imminent and is requesting Board approval to proceed in the best interests of the University should an offer be extended,” the school presented in an agenda item to the Board of Education.

According to Boise State, “The Big East plans to adopt a 12 team football conference with an East and West Division. The two division alignment allows the addition of a championship game at the end of the season. A conference championship game is expected to also add value to the media rights of the conference.”

"Being in a BCS conference is absolutely critical," Kustra told the board.

Kustra also said that by Boise State providing more than a year's notice to leave the Mountain West, the school would not have to pay a $5 million exit fee.

CBSSports.com has reported the league likely would be divided this way – West: Boise State, Houston, SMU, Louisville, Air Force and BYU (if the Cougars opt to join) and East: Cincinnati, Navy, UConn, South Florida, UCF and Rutgers.

Besides Boise State, sources told CBSSports.com that Houston, UCF, SMU and Navy are committed to joinig the Big East and only awaiting an official invitation. Sources said they expect Air Force to also join after those five schools have officially been added to the Big East.

Any new Big East members would not join the league until July 1, 2013.

What if in 2013....

There is no guarantee that the Big East gets another AQ big in 2013. Adding Boise State helps it's cause, but really, they are now the old Conference USA essentially, once Syracuse and Pitt leave. And I imagine UConn will be an ACC school at some point in the not so far future either. I think BSU is rolling the dice here. Why not make a case to be the 12th Big 12 team? I have no clue what is on the adjenda of the Big 12, but adding Boise State wouldn't be the worst thing they could do. I know the TV market and other sports besides football have a lot to do with it, but I just don't understand why they don't at least look at them, and/or BYU.
BYU makes even more sense. They are not only a competetive football program, but are also competetive in basketball and other sprots.
I guess I just don't spend enough time reading about the in's and out's of the Big 12 but seems like there are some good options out there that they are missing out on. And like I said before, Conference USA is not an AQ conference, so I don't know why the Big East should keep their AQ status once they are comprised entirely of former CUSA teams with the very few original Big East football programs left. The Big East is grasping at anyone and everyone right now that has even some whisp of a football program. That conference is junk in my opinion. 22 basketball teams or whatever, and football only members, with teams spread so far apart that it's going to be a nightmare for students.
Good luck Boise...you're going to need it, especially if the Big Least does not get its AQ status renewed in 2013.

Boise State gets authorization to join Big East

i have no problem with BSU and think they are a up and coming program with alot of things going for it. With that being said you shouldnt say Boise beat all these teams in the bowl games and make yourself feel so good about that. Its easy to muster up enough to beat 1 of these teams per year but let them play OK, OSU, NE, Texas, and all these teams in the same year. Look I know it feels good to beat Oklahoma because im a proud WVU fan but at the same time I understand next year or whenever my Mountaineers join the Big 12...we will have to play Oklahoma then Texas then OSU and while I cant wait to see how they do I cant help but feel a little nervous. By no means am I saying we should be scared to play these schools but im not going to go bragging beacause of what we did to UGA a few years ago or Oklahoma a few years ago. Its not the same playing 1 team like that a year and winning and playing 9 others. So while you have alot to look forward to with BSU growing and doing well you shoulnt be so careless in thinking just beacuse you can beat Oklahoma on a trick play that you can match up with these teams week in and week out. I would go as far to say you guys would be in the bottom of the SEC East even. Please dont take this like im knocking your team because thats not my intention but I find it to be a joke to believe BSU could run through the SEC or Big12 like they are superior to Alabama or LSU cause they are far from that. Either way good luck to you and your Broncos...I for one would like to see them get a shot against LSU but not at the expense of an undefeated OSU or Stanford team.

Boise State gets authorization to join Big East

It was two and one deal. Two at N and then 1 at boise.  The had a buyout for the 3rd game and Boise wanted 1,000,000 pen. for dropping the 3rd game.

ummnn...i'm not a vandal.  but i like the way you pick on the weaker team...just like when you choose not to play real teams.  boise jr college had an offer to play NE, but they didnt want to do a home/away game and wanted more than a million $.  the vandals at least had enough balls to play NE.  boise jr college still wants to blame everyone else for their lack of respect, when they have done nothing to earn respect.  if you are too scared to play in a real conference, you should at least try to get above .500 teams for your non-conference ones.  whining and pointing the finger are things they do in jr college...which they will always be...

Boise State gets authorization to join Big East

exactly...in the last 5 years they have played 5 above average teams....thats it!  they had their chance to move into a real schedule last year and they knew they would be throttled in the Pac12/14...so just whine and complain another year about not being given the chance.  boise jr college expecting a handout instead of making their own destiny.  always will be a jr college

Really!!!   Boise Jr. College.  The only people who call BSU, Boise Jr. College are Idaho Vandals.  The reason BSU will not get into the PAC12 is that they are a New College.  Each year they start a New program (masters/phd or reaserch) that is how you build a school.  Yes, BSU was a Jr college less than 40 years ago.  They are moving up they have passed up the poor Vandals.  As I recall the Vandals got Kicked out of the PAC around 60 years ago. Why?  Becaused they sucked (they had lot 50+ league games in a row).  Now they sit a the bottom of the WAC.   BSU has been moving up both in and out of the classroom.  So, Tough deal with it BSU is on the Rise,  you can talk all the trash you want.  They will play for the NC if not this year soon.   &n

Basically because they are in the MWC now.  I picked the WAC because, if you look at their past records in other sports, that's the competitive level they represent.

just give boise jr college their chance this year...put them up against a real team
You mean like Oklahoma, Virginia Tech, Georgia, Oregon, and Oregon State?  Oh yeah, Boise already beat them all the last 4 years.  And that feel good TCU?  They beat Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl last year.  If you're going to talk junk at least know what you're talking about.

Precisely.  It's amazing that BSU agreed to these terms to join the MWC.
