Slive says you can win without cheating

Posted on: July 20, 2011 3:00 pm

HOOVER, Ala. – In the past two weeks, CBSSports.com has reported in depth on cheating in college athletics. And even since the series began three more schools – West Virginia, Georgia Tech and LSU – have received major NCAA sanctions.

So I posed the question Wednesday to SEC commissioner Mike Slive that our series sought out to answer: Can you win in college football these days without cheating?

The commissioner’s answer: “Yes.”

“There’s a tendency to overstate – if there’s a school on probation for phone calls or text messaging, you’re going to lump that in with another school who might had done something very different,” Slive said.

“We need to figure out what we really want to stop and go from there.”

In the past 25 years, SEC programs have committed the most NCAA major infractions of any conference. Since 1987, every SEC football program, except for Vanderbilt, has received a major infraction.

SEC football programs are hardly the only guilty parties. Since 1987, only 21 of the 67 automatic qualifying BCS conference schools have not committed a major infraction. That number likely will reduce to 20 after the NCAA rules on the various allegations concerning North Carolina.

I agree 100% with you LSUSMC.  To say that LSU has been cheating and putting their name out there for a guy who never even stepped foot on the field is misleading.  I could see if it was somebody like Reggie Bush a star player who had alot to do with the success of a team over several years but that's not the case at LSU. It was 1 coach who wanted to make a name for himself and land a "big" recruit, and when the higher up people found out what this coach had done reported it to the NCAA and fired the coach.  They did not hide from what happen or try to cover it up like most school do (OSU) but did the right thing by all accounts.

LSU won two BCS NC's and we have not been accused by anyone of cheating to get them.  Our first incident in over 25 years was related to a kid that never played a down for LSU and a rogue coach that was dismissed immediately once it was brought to the attention of the right people.  If you look at the last few schools to get probation, most did little to nothing wrong in the grand scheme of things.  GaTech had two players get accused of getting $312 worth of benefits.  Not the end of the world and it was not the school that gave them the benefits.  USC's problem was related to a wannabe agent giving benefits to Bush's parents.  Maybe a better compliance dept could have rooted that out, but again, no competitive advantage was gained.  USC's real problem was with their arrogant AD, and they were hammered for that.  The problems at Ohio State and UNC are obviously more involved than the others, but at Ohio State it was the HC that was the problem, along with five or six players.  The president of the school made a stupid comment, but the compliance dept at Ohio State seems to have done a great job once an internal investigation started.  I think the mess at UNC may be bigger, but it is UNC and not that many people care about football there.  I gather the assistant HC was more concerned with helping his agent buddy than he was helping the football program at the school.  Not good.

Maybe you can win without cheating. But not in the SEC. I've read many times where college football is "religion" in the South. Well, if that's true, then cheating is the major doctrine of that religion. Academics? Please. They don't give a hoot about that.  Best college football conference? Sure. But at what cost?

The SEC is not the only conference that cheats but they do indeed cheat "the most" and to the greatest degree.  Of course, what's even sadder yet is that they already have the weakest (and in some cases non-existent) policing and academic standards in the NCAA.  Let's just stop kidding ourselves and make these guys legally "semi pro".  And that has nothing to do with their (tainted) success but everything to do with the aforementioned topics.

As for Mike Slime... oh brother... SERIOUSLY?  Just watching this guy talk makes me involuntarily grab for my wallet.

what a ridiculous answer.  teams can't even compete in the SEC without cheating.  The fact that Vandy's hasn't had a major infraction is all the proof you need.

Did you really think it was possible that the Commissioner of the SEC was about to answer your question with a "NO". Shocking! You mean he didn't concede that the conference he is responsible for could never have a team win unless they cheated?! This is some incredible journalism.
